Interest in Afrocentric Art

My interest in afrocentric art began with a request for a commission by a client interested in an original piece inspired by images seen online. Never having done an afrocentric piece before, I did some research and found that some key elements were images that depicted black individuals, particularly women in a very confident and proud manner, often with a focus on hair and accentuated with lots and lots of color. I had heard of afrocentric art before but I never realized how similar and compatible it was to my style and overall interests as an artist. As I made the sketches shown on the left, working on several ideas for the commission, I was amazed how quickly and enthusiastically I had come up with some really creative and original ideas-a process I have struggled with for a while. I'm excited to see where this newfound spark in inspiration takes me!
