On a trip to New York City I had the awesome experience of getting to check out the Metropolitan Museum of Art! I don't ever really remember going to any art museum as prestigious as one like the Met; I honestly thought I'd have to travel to Europe for such an opportunity. However, while I was there, I saw so many amazing things- oil paintings that took up entire walls, large, highly expressionistic statues sculpted by Italians, Greeks and Americans, ornate and gilded decorative pieces of jewelry and tableware, African statues, masks, boats and more carved and decorated with the most intricate patterns I've ever seen...there was so much to see that I actually came back a second day to see more, and even though I spent several hours gawking at piece after piece, I honestly don't even think I covered a fifth of the entire museum! There is so much to see. One of my favorite areas was definitely the European painting section and the sculptures. I've been trying to spend more time on developing my painting abilities, and working on anatomy, so I found the pieces done by artists with expertise in those areas to be particularly inspiring. As I've also become interested in zentangles and afrocentric art, I was also really inspired by the African section, with its heavy use of patterns; there was even a humongous ivory elephant tusk covered with these complex carvings! All in all, the trip was extremely inspiring.
